As you can probably guess, it’s important to care for your teeth if you want to keep your smile healthy. However, did you know that you can also keep your smile strong as you age? Or that there are a few things you’ll need to do to keep your smile strong as you get older?
You’ve probably heard that teeth weaken as you age, but did you know they aren’t meant to? In fact, your teeth are incredibly strong and may not weaken as we age—as long as they’re cared for properly.
For instance, did you know that following a healthy diet is one of the most important things you can do to preserve your teeth. You see, your mouth has both good and bad bacteria. Bad bacteria cause plaque to form and lead to issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Eating unhealthy foods upsets the balance between these bacteria, which creates an environment plaque is more likely to grow in.
Conversely, if you grind your teeth you could be wearing them down. In fact, when you grind you damage your enamel—the protective outer layer of your teeth—and leave your mouth more vulnerable to gum disease. Sadly, gum disease will weaken your teeth and make them more vulnerable.
Finally, please check any medications you’re taking. Some medications cause problems such as dry mouth, which can lead to long-term complications. We recommend speaking with our dentist, Dr. Kemp or Dr. Palmer to learn exactly what your medication can do to your smile and how you can avoid these types of issues.
If you eat well, keep up good oral hygiene, and visit your dentist often, you can enjoy a healthy smile as you age. If you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Bull City Dental at 919-680-3531. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
